The potential for local artists and creators looking to enter - and green - the carnival throw market is huge. Our analysis indicates that approximately 9000 krewe members will parade in Orleans Parish in 2013. 26 parades will roll uptown this year. The 'Truck Parades' will bring thousands of more riders. If the 9,000 krewe members spend what is reported to be an $800.00 average on throws - that's $7.2M being spent, mostly between now and Mardi Gras.

Unfortunately, the most convenient throw items remain plastic beads from oversees. If the members of one Super Krewe spend an average of $1500.00 each on throws, it equates to $56,000.00 per block. Assume 75% of that is spent on retail/bulk priced beads, that one krewe will throw 15 TONS of plastic beads PER BLOCK over a 70 block route - totalling 1050 TONS.

VerdiGras is not affiliated with any commercial operation, and believes "It's the Show not the Throw," that makes our celebration unique and cherished. We are very encouraged by the local community's interest in taking Mardi Gras into its logical next - greener - life.
